Monken warns Browns against drafting Sorsby in supplemental draft

Browns offensive coordinator Todd Monken warned Monday that selecting Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby in the NFL supplemental draft would be a “slippery slope.” Sorsby was ruled ineligible by the NCAA after placing thousands of bets on college and pro games, including wagers on his own team. His lawyers seek a temporary injunction to allow him to play in 2026, the upcoming legal battle.

Monken stressed the franchise does not need a quarterback embroiled in controversy, noting the Browns already have viable options. He added that talent alone cannot outweigh the reputational risk of a player who “put himself in that situation.” General manager Andrew Berry responded more cautiously, saying the team will evaluate every prospect before reaching a decision, for the organization.

Berry’s measured comment leaves the door open for Sorsby, who entered ESPN’s transfer rankings as the No. 1 quarterback after amassing 7,208 yards and 82 touchdowns across Cincinnati and Indiana. If a court grants the injunction before the June 22 deadline, Cleveland could weigh his upside against league‑wide scrutiny. As it stands, the Browns will likely stick with their current roster, for Cleveland's playoff hopes.
