NFL Rejects Brendan Sorsby Supplemental Draft Bid After Gambling Scandal

The NFL declined to hold a supplemental draft for former Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby, leaving the 2024 Big 12 passing leader's professional prospects in limbo. Sorsby applied for the draft three business days before the June 22 deadline, but the league cited insufficient documentation and timing concerns in a letter from NFL Management Council general counsel Larry Ferazani.

Sorsby's gambling violations and subsequent rehab stint led to NCAA ineligibility, prompting a lawsuit that temporarily restored his college eligibility. However, Texas Tech withdrew support amid potential Big 12 sanctions, forcing Sorsby to abandon his legal fight and pursue the NFL route instead. The quarterback made 31 college starts and passed for 3,186 yards in his final season at Cincinnati.

His attorney Jeffrey Kessler claims the NFL's decision violates the collective bargaining agreement and plans to pursue action through the NFLPA. Unlike previous cases like Hunter Dekkers, who played at Iowa Western after similar issues, Sorsby's advanced experience makes the junior college path less appealing. The 2027 NFL draft now represents his most viable professional pathway.

With training camps approaching and no draft scheduled, Sorsby faces a year away from football while preparing for next April's draft evaluation. The NFL's refusal to act on his petition effectively ends his immediate NFL aspirations and raises questions about how teams will assess his talent gap.
