Brendan Sorsby will skip Texas Tech’s 2026 season after a court fight over his NCAA status. The former transfer quarterback, who admitted placing over 9,000 bets totaling $90,000, now seeks entry into the NFL supplemental draft. The move follows a temporary injunction that cleared a path for him to play.

Texas Tech officials say the university acted with integrity and will not pursue refunds on NIL deals. Chairman Cody Campbell confirmed that the school will not seek the return of money paid to Sorsby, while the university’s president and athletic director pledged full support amid divergent opinions.

Judge Ken Curry ruled Sorsby could play after sitting out two games and continuing addiction treatment, sparking backlash from the Big 12, state attorneys general and fans. The NCAA now seeks an expedited court decision before the season starts on Aug. 28, claiming Curry overstepped in granting the injunction.

If selected, Sorsby would become the first player from Texas Tech to enter the supplemental draft since 2019, a rare path only used when players’ college eligibility is compromised. His case highlights the growing clash between gambling regulations and collegiate athletics, underscoring the league’s cautious stance on supplemental selections.
