Joey Browner, the Minnesota Vikings' first defensive back selected in the first round, has died at age 65. The team announced his passing on Sunday without disclosing the cause of death. Browner was a six-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro during his nine seasons with the Vikings from 1983 to 1991.

Selected 19th overall out of USC in the 1983 NFL draft, Browner and Harrison Smith remain the only safeties ever chosen by the Vikings in the first round. His 37 interceptions rank fifth in franchise history, and he led Minnesota in tackles in 1986 and 1987. Browner also recorded 17 forced fumbles and three interception returns for touchdowns in 138 games.

Browner spent his final NFL season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1992 before being named to the NFL's 1980s Team of the Decade. The Vikings inducted him into their Ring of Honor in 2013 and named him one of the 50 Greatest Vikings in 2010. His legacy lives on through players like Smith, who honored Browner after breaking his franchise interception record.
