Former NFL RB Doug Martin's Parents File Wrongful Death Lawsuit Over Police Restraint

The parents of former NFL All-Pro running back Doug Martin have filed a wrongful death lawsuit claiming police excessive force and delayed medical care caused their son's October death. Leslie and Douglas Martin allege Oakland officers held their son face down during a mental health crisis, with restraint identified as a 'substantial factor' in his death.

Martin, 36, spent his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after being selected 31st overall in the 2012 NFL draft. The former Pro Bowler rushed for 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns as a rookie, earning All-Pro honors in 2015. Oakland police responded to reports of a break-in, found Martin hiding in a neighbor's home, and became involved in what they described as a 'brief struggle' before he turned unresponsive.

The lawsuit further accuses Falck USA Inc. paramedics of taking over 15 minutes to respond and failing to provide prompt medical assistance. Police initially believed Martin was 'sleeping or pretending' rather than requesting immediate medical help. The Oakland Police Department declined comment on the pending litigation, referring inquiries to the city attorney's office. Autopsy results remain pending after additional testing requested by the family.

Martin's death during a mental health episode has drawn attention to police response protocols and emergency medical care procedures in crisis situations. The case raises questions about use of force during mental health calls and the adequacy of emergency response times. Martin's legacy as one of Tampa Bay's top 50 players adds weight to the family's pursuit of accountability.
