Former NBA Players Beasley, Davis Face Federal Gambling Indictment

Former NBA guard Malik Beasley and ex-player Ed Davis headline a six-defendant federal indictment unveiled Monday, accused of orchestrating a sports betting scheme during the 2023-24 season. Prosecutors allege Beasley accepted bribes to manipulate his statistical performance in at least three games while with the Milwaukee Bucks, enabling co-conspirators to place fraudulent wagers on prop bets. Davis served as Beasley's alleged 'gatekeeper' in the operation.

Davis and four others were arrested Monday, while Beasley and agent Paolo Zamorano remained at large. Court documents reveal Beasley informed Davis of plans to underperform on rebounds before a January 26, 2024 matchup against Cleveland, finishing with three boards against a 3.5-rebound betting line. The scheme reportedly involved tens of thousands of dollars in fraudulent bets, with prosecutors claiming Beasley accumulated millions in gambling losses during his nine-year career.

Beasley's financial troubles include a $1 million judgment against him in March and eviction from a Detroit high-rise last summer over $21,505 in unpaid rent. These legal issues emerged while he negotiated a three-year, $42 million contract with the Detroit Pistons. Unlike recent gambling cases involving Jontay Porter and Terry Rozier, this indictment appears unrelated to prior Eastern District investigations.

The case raises serious questions about NBA integrity protocols and player financial oversight. With Beasley allegedly compromising game outcomes for personal gain, the league faces potential scrutiny over its gambling monitoring systems and player support structures during career transitions.
