Todd Archer covers the Dallas Cowboys. FRISCO, Texas -- Christian Parker, 34, is the youngest defensive coordinator in Cowboys history. He started coaching at Virginia State at 21. "I want to be this by 25. This by 30," Parker said. "Those timelines don't matter."

The Cowboys' 2026 season hinges on Parker's defense, which was poor last season -- most points allowed, 30th in yards. Changes are enormous: a 3-4 front, up to 14 new contributors, and only one coach remaining from 2025 (J.J. Clark).

Parker's hiring almost didn't happen. He was the ninth of nine Zoom interviews. Daronte Jones was the front-runner. "I really didn't want to do it," coach Brian Schottenheimer said. But Ryan Feder urged him. In a meeting room at The Star, Parker installed a defense as if talking to players. Schottenheimer and 8-12 others, including Will McClay, were transfixed. "He would be a great hire," Schottenheimer said.

Owner Jerry Jones said, "I can value the youthful qualities... that's a comparable edge."
