Rangers second baseman Josh Smith returned to uniform Thursday after being hospitalized with viral meningitis, expressing uncertainty about his return timeline. The 25-year-old hasn't played since May 3, initially downplaying symptoms before being hospitalized for over a week. "I'm sure it's probably uncharted waters," Smith said of his recovery process.

Smith acknowledged his initial reluctance to seek medical help, fearing he might be "too dramatic." "Thank God I did just 'cause how serious it was," he reflected. The infielder has regained lost weight and performed light jogging but has not resumed batting. He reported no pain from previous glute strain or wrist inflammation issues.

With Marcus Semien traded to the Mets, Smith became Texas' regular second baseman this season. He's currently hitting .217 with no home runs and six RBIs in 31 games. "I just need to get able to where I can help us win a baseball game," Smith stated about his return approach, focusing on functionality rather than reaching 100% health.
