Ohtani Skips Bullpen as Dodgers Caution Over Knee

Los Angeles Dodgers two‑way star Shohei Ohtani did not throw his scheduled bullpen session Saturday as he continues to deal with discomfort in his left knee. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Ohtani experienced "a little bit of regression" after his last bullpen session Wednesday and that the team opted to proceed with caution.

Ohtani, 32, was one of the top pitchers in the majors in his first full season on the mound since 2023, logging a 1.79 ERA in 14 starts before knee pain resurfaced earlier this month. He was scratched from his next start and did not travel to Philadelphia for the All‑Star Game, despite leading all vote‑getters, focusing on treatment that included a lubricant injection on July 12.

Roberts noted that Ohtani’s knee pain is an issue only when he pitches, not when he hits or runs. The four‑time MVP has started the Dodgers’ last 15 games as the designated hitter, batting .286 with 22 home runs and a .920 OPS in 99 games. Ohtani has not spoken to reporters since before the All‑Star break.

The injury stems from a congenital condition called bipartite patella, a two‑bone kneecap that Ohtani has managed since a procedure in September 2019 with the Angels.
