San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan suffered significant injuries in a July 14 car crash near his northern California home, leaving him limited as training camp opens Sunday. He broke his nose, three ribs and his hand, needed more than 40 stitches in his face, and suffered a severe concussion when he collided with an SUV. The other driver was uninjured; no drugs, alcohol, or citations were involved.

Shanahan has been recovering at home and is healing well, but doctors will not clear him for all activities until concussion symptoms clear. Assistant Head Coach Chris Foerster and team coordinators will handle head coach duties during this period. Shanahan informed assistants Tuesday; players are learning the news. General manager John Lynch will hold a news conference Saturday.

The 2026 season marks Shanahan's 10th in San Francisco, tying Bill Walsh for the longest head coaching tenure in franchise history. With 82 regular-season victories, Shanahan ranks third all-time for the 49ers; 11 wins would surpass Walsh for second. The 49ers open the season Sept. 10 against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia.
