San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was injured in a car crash earlier in July, sustaining non-life-threatening injuries that will limit his participation at the start of training camp, the team announced Saturday. The organization thanked first responders for their efforts.

Chris Foerster, assistant head coach and offensive line coach, will run the team alongside coordinators Klay Kubiak, Raheem Morris, and Brant Boyer while Shanahan recovers. Shanahan is entering his 10th season and holds a 91-72 regular-season and playoff record, ranking third in franchise wins behind George Seifert (108) and Bill Walsh (102).

Under Shanahan, the 49ers have reached two Super Bowls (2019, 2023) and two NFC Championship Games (2021, 2022). Last season, despite significant injuries, San Francisco finished 12-5 and won a playoff game, with Shanahan finishing fifth in AP Coach of the Year voting.

The team opens the 2024 season September 10 against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia.
