MLB Teams Flee Main Street Sports for League Control

Six MLB teams are cutting ties with Main Street Sports to join a new broadcast model under Major League Baseball. The Milwaukee Brewers, Miami Marlins, Kansas City Royals, St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, and Tampa Bay Rays will have their games produced by MLB starting in 2026.

The move marks a major shift away from regional sports networks, which have struggled amid cord-cutting and financial instability. Main Street, formerly Diamond Sports Group, emerged from bankruptcy just a year ago but has since missed payments and failed to secure new funding. Teams are racing to stabilize broadcast operations before spring training.

MLB's push to control all local rights by 2028 aims to create a national package and eliminate blackouts. However, teams could lose up to 30% of revenue tied to traditional cable deals. That may impact payrolls and competitive balance as the league transitions to a more centralized media strategy.
