MLB commissioner Rob Manfred stated on Sunday that the league is "planning on playing baseball next year" despite ongoing uncertainty regarding labor negotiations. With the current collective bargaining agreement set to expire at 11:59 p.m. ET on Dec. 1, questions remain about whether a work stoppage will impact the 2027 season.

Manfred told ESPN during the Little League Classic that meetings with the MLB Players Association are occurring regularly. "Every week, we've had days where we've met with the players," he said. "It's early, but we've got a lot of work to do, and we're at it." He emphasized that the primary goal for both sides is to reach a deal and ensure the game continues.

Key sticking points include the owners' desire for a salary cap system versus the union's push for higher minimum salaries and relaxed luxury tax thresholds. Other issues involve service time rules, the international draft, and TV revenue. While a lockout remains a possibility if no agreement is reached, Manfred expressed confidence in continuing operations.

The commissioner also highlighted the success of the upcoming Little League Classic featuring the Toronto Blue Jays and the Chicago Cubs in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He praised the event's unique atmosphere and the interaction between professional players and youth participants.
