Gurriel exits Diamondbacks loss with hamstring issue

Arizona’s left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. exited Friday’s late home loss to Colorado after a sliding catch triggered left hamstring tightness. The play came in the early sixth inning when he sprinted to left‑center, dove feet‑first and grimaced before standing. After a chat with manager Torey Lovullo and medical team, the 32‑year‑old limped off. Jorge Barrosa shifted to center while Ryan Waldschmidt took over left.

Gurriel returned to the lineup on April 18, ending an eight‑month rehab from a torn ACL in his right knee. Since his comeback he is batting .228, so far with one homer and 11 RBI, including two RBI in Friday’s game before his departure. The modest production reflects a gradual return to form after a career‑altering injury.

Lovullo’s decision to keep Barrosa in center and move Waldschmidt left preserves defensive balance but forces the D‑backs to rely on bench depth for the remainder of the series. Arizona trails the NL West by two games, and losing Gurriel’s bat could tighten the race for a wild‑card spot. The team now must find another run producer quickly.
