The Athletics have activated left-hander Jeffrey Springs from the 15-day injured list after he recovered from a right hip injury. He will start Wednesday night's game against the Kansas City Royals.

To make room on the roster, right-hander Seth Johnson was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas. Springs enters the game with a 3-11 record and 6.17 ERA this season, having struck out 88 batters in 108 innings pitched.

Despite his struggles, Springs has shown some upside with his strikeout totals, though he has also surrendered 28 home runs - the most in the American League this season. The Athletics are hoping his return can provide some stability to their starting rotation.
