Jacob deGrom is scheduled to start for the Texas Rangers on Thursday night, with 2,000 career strikeouts within reach. The two-time Cy Young Award winner enters the game with 1,998 strikeouts in 1,660 1/3 innings over 271 starts since his 2014 debut. DeGrom has recorded 147 strikeouts in 120 2/3 innings this season.

Rangers manager Skip Schumaker confirmed deGrom recovered well after a bullpen session following triceps fatigue that limited him to two innings in his previous start. Schumaker noted deGrom won't face specific limitations and they'll monitor his condition between innings.

At 38, deGrom would become the ninth active player and 94th all-time to reach the milestone, joining Kevin Gausman, Sonny Gray, and Aaron Nola as the fourth pitcher this season to achieve it. Hall of Famer Randy Johnson holds the record for fastest to 2,000 strikeouts by games (262), ahead of Clayton Kershaw's 277.

DeGrom has been dealing with left hip and glute issues recently, making the extra rest beneficial. He struck out three in two innings during a 7-0 loss to the Angels last Thursday, allowing two runs and five hits.
