Mets Place Polanco on IL, Ankle Surgery Planned

Jorge Polanco's disappointing Mets debut ended Wednesday when the team placed him on the 10-day injured list with left ankle bursitis. Interim manager Andy Green confirmed Polanco will undergo surgery soon, citing the player's inability to overcome persistent pain.

Polanco signed a two-year, $40 million deal in December expecting to replace Pete Alonso at first base, despite minimal experience at the position. The former All-Star struggled with multiple injuries this season, including back and knee issues, and was limited to just two starts at first base. He batted .148 with two homers and six RBI in 145 plate appearances.

Green noted Polanco's ankle issues have affected his mechanics at the plate. The Mets recalled infielder Eric Wagaman from Triple-A Syracuse to replace Polanco on the active roster, while also bringing up Christopher Morel and Chance Mc Dermott.

Polanco is expected to recover in time for spring training next February, assuming the collective bargaining agreement doesn't result in a lockout when it expires Dec. 1.
