Mets Sideline Struggling Polanco with Wrist Injury

New York Mets designated hitter Jorge Polanco landed on the 10-day injured list Saturday, sidelined by a right wrist contusion. Polanco has been entirely out of the lineup since Tuesday, following an MRI performed on Thursday, which also revealed an unspecified leg injury troubling the veteran infielder.

This move comes at an awful time for the 32-year-old, who inked a two-year, $40 million contract this past offseason. His production has been severely lacking; Polanco is currently batting a meager .179 with just one home run and two RBIs through the early part of the season. The IL stint is retroactive to Wednesday.

Managerial decisions forced the Mets to summon catcher Hayden Senger from Triple-A as a corresponding player move to fill the roster spot. Polanco’s struggles at the plate, coupled with this fresh injury setback, put immediate pressure on the team’s offensive depth chart after they banked on his production this winter.

Placing Polanco on the shelf immediately addresses a physical issue, but it does little to solve the .179 batting average that precipitated the move in the first place. The Mets need an answer fast if they hope to climb the standings.
