Why the New M5 MacBook Pro Is Worth Skipping

Apple refreshed the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips in March 2026, but serious buyers might want to hold off. The new models offer faster processors, yet they retain the same design Apple has used since 2021—and a major overhaul is coming soon.

The next MacBook Pro will feature Apple's first OLED display, replacing mini-LED. Individual pixel lighting delivers deeper blacks and brighter colors with no bloom. Rumors also point to touchscreen capabilities, a reversal from Apple's long-standing position that Macs wouldn't get touch input. A Dynamic Island will replace the current notch.

Under the hood, expect 2nm M6-series chips with GAA nanosheet transistors for improved performance and power efficiency. The OLED and touchscreen combo will likely be limited to premium models, potentially branded as "Ultra," with pricing to match. Apple could launch as early as late 2026, though chip shortages suggest early 2027 is more realistic.

If you don't care about OLED or touch and want something more affordable, the current M5 generation makes sense. Those wanting the latest display tech should wait, but first-generation products sometimes have issues—Apple's 2016 butterfly keyboard launch comes to mind.
