iPad Mini 8: OLED, A19 Pro Chip, Release Date

Apple is reportedly close to launching the iPad mini 8, the successor to the iPad mini 7 released over 21 months ago. Codenamed J510/J511, the new model is expected to feature the A19 Pro chip, likely the mid-tier variant used in the iPhone Air. This chip is built on an upgraded 3nm N3P process, offering improved performance and efficiency. There's also speculation about a potential A20 Pro chip, though the iPad mini has historically not always received Apple's newest processors at launch.

A major upgrade rumored for the iPad mini 8 is its transition from LCD to OLED display. Samsung Display is said to be developing OLED panels, with mass production reportedly underway. The screen size may increase from 8.3 inches to 8.7 inches, and it could include a 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate. However, unlike the iPad Pro's LTPO OLED panels, the iPad mini might use a dimmer single-stack LTPS panel.

The iPad mini 8 is also expected to feature a more water-resistant design, potentially with an official IP rating for the first time. Apple is said to be developing a vibration-based speaker system that eliminates traditional speaker holes, allowing for a more sealed enclosure. This design approach aligns with a 2014 patent for a mechanically actuated panel acoustic system.

Reports suggest the iPad mini 8 could launch as early as October this year, with Samsung handling OLED panel production. Pricing remains uncertain, but the current iPad mini 7 starts at $599 after a recent $100 increase. Analysts expect further price hikes due to rising chip costs, though the more affordable 10th-generation iPad ($449) offers many similar features.
