Apple's OLED MacBook Pro Production Gets Underway

Samsung Display has begun mass production of OLED panels for Apple's future MacBook Pro models. The company's new 8.6-generation fab in Asan, South Korea, uses larger glass substrates to cut multiple laptop-sized screens from a single sheet, improving yields and lowering costs. This move is a critical step for Apple to transition its flagship laptops from mini-LED to OLED technology.

The production line employs rigid OLED panels with oxide TFT backplanes and advanced tandem structures. These designs offer higher brightness, better power efficiency, and a longer lifespan than conventional single-stack OLEDs. Analysts Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman both report the first OLED MacBook Pro will feature a touchscreen display, thinner frames, and a hole-punch camera, potentially in a pill-shaped cutout like the iPhone's Dynamic Island.

Powered by M6 chips, the redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models are targeted for a late 2026 or early 2027 launch. This follows the expected introduction of M5 Pro and M5 Max models in the coming months. Apple has precedent for two MacBook Pro refreshes in a single year, having done so in 2023 with both M2 and M3 chip updates.
