Apple Warns iPhone Users: Update iOS 13/14 to Avoid Hacking Tools

Apple is urging iPhone users running iOS 13 or iOS 14 to immediately upgrade to iOS 15 to guard against malicious hacking tools like Coruna and DarkSword. These exploit kits exploit vulnerabilities in older iOS versions, enabling hackers to compromise devices via compromised websites or messages. Apple’s support document warns that unpatched devices risk data theft, emphasizing that iOS 15 and newer versions include critical security patches. Users who cannot update promptly can activate Lockdown Mode in iOS 16, which blocks risky features like message images and untrusted websites, though this is intended for high-risk users, not general consumers. Safari’s Safe Browsing feature, enabled by default, also blocks known malicious domains linked to these attacks.

The threat has been active in Ukraine, China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Malaysia, but Apple states there’s no evidence of U.S. targeting. Devices on iOS 15 or later, including updates released March 11, are protected. Apple clarifies that no iPhones currently ship with iOS 13 or 14 as a final update, ensuring all newer models can upgrade. The company also notes that iOS 26 includes additional security improvements to address lingering risks.

Apple’s push highlights the urgency of software updates, as zero-day exploits like these often target unpatched systems. While Lockdown Mode offers a temporary safeguard, Apple stresses that iOS 15 provides the most effective defense. Users are advised to connect to trusted networks and avoid suspicious links until updates are installed. Cybersecurity experts warn that delaying updates could expose millions to state-sponsored hacking campaigns.

Apple’s proactive measures, including Safe Browsing and Lockdown Mode, underscore its focus on mitigating emerging threats. However, the broader issue of outdated software vulnerabilities remains a critical concern for global users, particularly in regions with limited access to newer iOS versions.
