Apple unveiled new Mac mini models this week, featuring the first M6 chip in lower-end versions. However, the M6 rollout will be limited, as Apple won't produce M6 Pro or M6 Max variants, shaking up the Mac lineup for the next couple of years.

The Mac mini is the first device with the M6 chip, but other models will follow. The 14-inch MacBook Pro is expected to get M6 in October 2026, while the 24-inch iMac will likely receive it around the same time. The MacBook Air is slated for early 2027, and the iPad Pro and iPad Air will adopt M6 in future updates, with the iPad Air typically one generation behind.

Instead of M6 Pro and M6 Max, Apple plans to accelerate development of M7 Pro and M7 Max, which will feature advanced on-device AI and GPU capabilities. High-end Macs, including the upcoming MacBook Ultra and Mac Studio, will continue using M5 Pro, M5 Max, and M5 Ultra chips until the M7 family arrives in late 2026 or early 2027.

The M6 chip itself boasts a 2-nanometer process, a 12-core CPU with the world's fastest core, a larger 12-core GPU with Neural Accelerators, a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, and up to 170GB/s memory bandwidth. It also improves shader architecture, caching, and ray tracing, delivering 50% higher geometry rates for complex graphics.
