Apple Pulls Rave App, Faces Antitrust Lawsuits

In August 2025 Apple pulled the cross‑platform streaming app Rave from the App Store, citing “unspecified allegations of fraud and vague concerns about content moderation.” Rave, which lets users watch and chat about shows across iOS, macOS, Android, and Windows, claims the move was a tactic to eliminate competition from Apple’s own SharePlay service.

Apple’s justification mirrors earlier removals of apps flagged for malware by security vendors. Reddit threads cite Rave’s unmoderated chat rooms, pornography, scams, and even CSAM, while Kaspersky, BitDefender, and Google also labeled the app as malicious. Rave argues Apple mislabeled its Mac client, preventing users from installing it.

After the removal, Rave’s service is confined to Windows and Android, cutting off its unique cross‑platform appeal that SharePlay lacks. The company has filed antitrust suits in the U.S., Canada, Brazil, the Netherlands, and Russia, seeking re‑introduction on iOS/macOS and damages for the loss of market share.

Rave claims it has since built “industry‑leading” content moderation and age‑verification tools to preempt Apple’s concerns. The lawsuit underscores the tension between platform control and competitive fairness, as Apple’s policy shifts directly impact third‑party developers who offer services that rival its native features in today’s market.
