Apple Pulls Plug on Vision Pro After M5 Refresh Fails

Apple dropped the Vision Pro after the October 2025 M5 refresh failed to spark demand. The company added a faster chip and a Dual Knit Band, but left the weight and price untouched. Even with a 120‑Hz refresh and extra battery life, the headset stayed at $3,499 and drew little interest and no sales.

Critics point to the headset’s 1.3‑pound bulk, which the new band only slightly eases. Sales lagged behind Apple’s flagship products, with only about 600,000 units sold since launch and a return rate higher than any modern device. The high price and cumbersome weight made the Vision Pro a niche purchase for early adopters only.

With the Vision Pro team reallocated, Apple is channeling talent toward Siri and future AR glasses. Vision Pro chief Mike Rockwell now leads Siri, while former headset engineers work on lightweight smart spectacles that lack an integrated display. The company’s pivot signals that virtual reality will not be its priority moving forward for the foreseeable future.

Apple continues to sell the M5 model despite the lack of new hardware, but no new Vision Pro is planned. The firm’s focus has shifted to Ray‑Ban‑style smart glasses that incorporate AI without a display, a move that reflects the company’s frustration with the power demands of headset tech. The Vision Pro line remains dormant.
