Apple confirmed it will stop updating the original Pixelmator app for iPhone and iPad. This move comes as the company prepares to launch Pixelmator Pro on the iPad, signaling a clear shift toward its more powerful, professional creative software suite. The classic version, originally released in 2014, offered basic editing tools.

The original Pixelmator app served as a companion to the now-discontinued Mac version, providing simple cropping and color adjustments. While the app remains functional for existing users, it will not receive future features or compatibility fixes. This leaves Photomator, another Apple-owned photo editor, as the current free alternative for casual users.

Pixelmator Pro for iPad aims to deliver a desktop-class experience with a touch-optimized workspace and full Apple Pencil support. It bridges the gap between iPad and Mac workflows, offering advanced tools previously exclusive to the desktop. This consolidation pushes creative professionals toward a unified, subscription-based ecosystem for high-end editing.
