Apple Adds Charge‑Limit Feature to MacBooks

Apple has rolled out a new Charge Limit setting in macOS Tahoe 26.4, allowing users to cap MacBook battery charging at 80 %, 85 %, 90 %, 95 % or 100 %. The move mirrors a similar feature already available on iPhone 15 and newer models.

Lithium‑ion cells age fastest when held at full charge, so keeping a MacBook at 100 % accelerates capacity loss. By setting a lower cap, users can reduce chemical wear without disabling the existing Optimized Battery Charging routine.

Setting the limit is straightforward: open System Settings, navigate to Battery, tap the info icon next to Charging, and slide to the desired percentage. macOS will stop charging once the threshold is reached, though it may still hit 100 % occasionally to maintain accurate level readings.

For workers who keep laptops plugged in at desks, the trade‑off between a slightly lower usable battery and longer overall lifespan is worthwhile. Those who need more mobile flexibility can choose a higher cap, balancing performance with preservation.
