Google Password Manager Adding Passkey Import Export Support on Android

Google's Android password system appears ready to adopt a key security feature. The company's Password Manager contains hidden interfaces for both importing and exporting passkeys, suggesting imminent support for the Credential Exchange Protocol that allows secure key transfers between devices.

Passkeys eliminate traditional passwords by using cryptographic key pairs stored locally on devices. Users authenticate with biometrics like fingerprints or Face ID instead of remembering complex credentials. When switching phones, the Credential Exchange Protocol enables secure migration of private keys without regenerating new credentials across all services.

Apple's iOS 26 and macOS 26 already support this protocol, along with password managers like Bitwarden and 1Password. Google joined the FIDO Alliance's CXP initiative but lagged in implementation despite Android's dependency on Google Play Services for passkey synchronization.

The discovery indicates Google's infrastructure is prepared for rollout. Other Android-based managers including Samsung Pass could soon offer similar migration capabilities, potentially accelerating passkey adoption across the mobile ecosystem.
