Amazon sued over alleged tariff profit windfall

A Seattle federal court heard a class‑action suit accusing Amazon of keeping billions in extra costs passed to shoppers after the Trump administration’s tariffs. Plaintiffs claim the retailer profited hundreds of millions of dollars by not seeking restitution that a 6‑3 Supreme Court ruling says corporations may recover. The complaint argues Amazon’s refusal was a political favor to the former president.

The lawsuit notes that rivals such as DHL, FedEx and UPS have already begun reclaiming tariff refunds and plan to pass those savings to customers. Even Nintendo entered litigation against the U.S. government to recoup similar duties. By contrast, Amazon allegedly “has not returned any portion of those costs” and shows no intent to do so, leaving consumers to shoulder the burden of what the filing calls an unlawful windfall.

Legal analysts say the case could force Amazon to either file for restitution or face a court‑ordered distribution of recovered funds. If the court sides with plaintiffs, shoppers may finally see price relief on goods inflated by the disputed tariffs, while the verdict could set a precedent for how e‑commerce platforms handle government‑imposed cost recoveries.
