Aptoide Debuts AppArena iOS Store in Japan

Aptoide just rolled out AppArena, positioning it as the first dedicated alternative iOS game storefront for the Japanese market. This launch directly follows regulatory pressure, specifically Japan's new Mobile Software Competition Act of 2025, which forced Apple to allow third-party app distribution channels. The service is available immediately across the region.

Partnering with BBSS Corporation, a SoftBank-owned IT provider, AppArena aims to disrupt traditional ranking mechanisms favoring discovery through editorial curation. Consumers gain access to 15-minute cloud-based game trials, bypassing local storage use, alongside up to 10% cashback on in-app purchases made through the store.

Central to the platform is the Game Genie AI feature, which employs Aptoide’s metadata, user signals, and large language models to provide intent-based recommendations. CEO Paulo Trezentos framed the move as introducing an AI layer atop the existing ecosystem, allowing users to bypass lengthy searches for entertainment.

This entry into Japan’s highly sophisticated mobile sector establishes a distinct new retail outlet for iOS gaming content. The integration of cloud trials and AI curation suggests a direct challenge to Apple's established App Store mechanisms for discovery and transaction processing within the country.
