Apple Loses Antitrust Battle Over App Store Commissions

Apple has been fighting antitrust regulators globally and is about to lose another battle in the US after attempting to charge commissions on third-party payment platforms. In a regulatory filing, Apple admits it may no longer be able to extract such fees.

The EU Commission first forced Apple to allow third-party app stores, challenging its 30% commission on purchases. Similar rulings followed in Japan and Brazil. In the US, courts required Apple to permit alternative payment platforms for in-app purchases, but the company imposed a 27% commission plus 3% processing fees, effectively maintaining its revenue model.

A US judge deemed this a clear abuse of the ruling. Apple argued the court didn't specify acceptable rates but offered reduced commissions: 15% for standard apps, 10% for partner programs and subscription renewals, and 5% for Small Business Program apps.

Despite these concessions, Apple acknowledges it will likely collect nothing from third-party platforms. Services revenue faces a sharp decline over coming quarters — a first for the company — which will likely impact Apple's valuation.
