ICE Bans Meta Glasses Over Privacy Concerns

ICE has reportedly told employees they cannot wear Meta glasses while working. A memo sent to staff said "the use of Meta Glasses or similar devices could unintentionally capture, record, or transmit sensitive information, potentially compromising privacy and legal protections," according to The New York Times. The policy covers all agency employees, not just field agents.

A DHS spokesperson said workers have "always" been barred from using "personally owned body-worn cameras." However, ICE and CBP agents have been spotted wearing Meta's smart glasses in at least six states over recent months. In one case reported by 404 Media, a CBP agent was recorded with his glasses despite policy. Another Border Patrol member wore them during an immigration raid.

While DHS advises against smart glasses, budget documents reported by Ken Klippenstein indicate ICE hopes to equip officers with bespoke smart glasses featuring "biometric identification capabilities" by next year. Meta hasn't commented on law enforcement suitability, but faces backlash over an unreleased facial recognition system and an easily bypassed privacy LED.
