Chinese Developers File New Antitrust Complaint Over Apple App Store Fees

A coalition of 48 Chinese developers lodged an antitrust complaint with the State Administration for Market Regulation, accusing Apple of breaking a promise to offer the lowest commission rate in China. They claim the current 25% commission on paid apps and in‑app purchases is excessive and request an investigation into alleged market abuse.

The developers cite Apple's recent fee reductions in Brazil and Japan as evidence the company can lower rates elsewhere. In March, Apple cut its China commission from 30% to 25% and reduced subscription fees to 12%, but the group argues that allowing third‑party app stores, as mandated in the EU, could push fees down to 5%.

Apple faces mounting global pressure, including a €500 million fine for EU Digital Markets Act violations and a U.S. order to permit external payment links. The complaint adds to a decade‑long series of challenges in China, underscoring growing scrutiny of the App Store’s pricing model.
