Epic Games Slams Apple's EU App Store Rules Under DMA

The European Commission has welcomed Apple's revised app store rules, which follow a close dialogue after a non-compliance decision in April 2025. A Commission spokesperson praised the removal of Apple's Core Technology Fee and the expanded eligibility for third-party app stores on iOS.

However, Epic Games strongly disagrees with the changes. In a post on X, the Fortnite developer argued that Apple's new terms still violate the Digital Markets Act, particularly regarding free link-outs for purchases and effective use of competing stores. Epic claims Apple's 10% to 15% commission on linked web payments and the new 5% Core Technology Commission on third-party app stores are deliberate violations.

Epic previously launched the Epic Game Store for iOS in regions where Apple is legally required to permit third-party stores, including the EU, Japan, and Brazil. The company also successfully sued Google, leading to reduced Play Store fees and easier installation of alternative app stores on Android.

Epic emphasized that if the Commission accepts Apple's terms and drops enforcement actions, the law will become meaningless and fail to benefit consumers and developers as intended.
