Apple blocked from UK, Italy F1 rights until 2030s

Apple will stream Formula 1 in the United States via Apple TV+ starting in the 2026 season, but the company has not announced any plans to pursue similar rights abroad. Industry observers expected the tech giant to target premier markets such as the United Kingdom and Italy, where F1 draws massive audiences.

Sky, however, locked down those territories weeks ago, extending its existing broadcast contracts. The UK and Ireland deal now runs through 2034, while Italy’s agreement continues until 2032. Both extensions were signed before any bidding process could begin, effectively shutting out Apple and other potential suitors. The renewal underscores Sky’s confidence in its sports portfolio and its willingness to invest heavily to retain premium content.

The UK‑Ireland extension carries a price tag of roughly $270 million per year, amounting to about $1.35 billion over the contract’s life. With Sky securing the rights, Apple’s international expansion faces a six‑year delay at best, leaving European fans to continue watching races on traditional TV rather than a streaming‑only platform.

For viewers, the outcome means no immediate shift to a subscription‑based streaming model in those key regions. Cable and satellite packages will retain F1 as a flagship offering, while Apple can focus on deepening its US subscriber base. The move also signals that legacy broadcasters remain formidable opponents to tech entrants in premium sports.
