Apple Faces Brazil Scrutiny Over AI Ad Claims

Apple is grappling with fresh regulatory challenges in Brazil after the country’s consumer protection agency, Procon Carioca, launched an inquiry into whether the tech giant misled customers about its delayed Apple Intelligence features. The investigation follows a $250 million U.S. settlement resolving similar allegations about Siri’s delayed rollout.

Procon Carioca has demanded 20 days for Apple to address questions about which AI capabilities were promised for the iPhone 16, how consumers were informed, and which ads were used in Brazil. The agency also seeks data on consumer complaints and Apple’s plans to rectify any misleading claims. These probes stem from Brazil’s Consumer Protection Code, which bars deceptive advertising practices.

Tecnoblog reported that Apple refused to comment on the inquiry, raising concerns about transparency. The U.S. settlement, approved last week, offers affected users up to $95 per device if they file claims. Brazilian regulators may pursue similar compensation if Apple’s ads are found deceptive.

This escalation highlights global tensions as tech companies race to deliver AI features while managing consumer expectations. For Apple, resolving these cases could set precedents for how AI rollouts are marketed worldwide.
