Apple fined $20k in Brazil for iPhone charger omission

Apple faces another fine in Brazil for selling iPhones without chargers, this time R$101,627.50 (approximately $20,000) from consumer protection authorities in Alagoas state. Regulators argue removing the power adapter violates Brazil's Consumer Defense Code by shifting the burden of purchasing an "indispensable item" for proper product use onto consumers.

This represents Apple's latest legal trouble in Brazil over the charger issue. In 2022, the Brazilian Ministry of Justice ordered suspension of iPhone sales nationwide, and in 2021, Apple paid roughly $2 million in fines for the same practice. Procon-AL increased the initial fine from $12,000 due to aggravating factors.

Apple's Brazilian subsidiary now has 20 days to appeal the decision. If the appeal fails, the fine amount will be adjusted based on Brazil's IPCA-E inflation index. The repeated penalties highlight Apple's ongoing conflict with Brazilian consumer protection authorities regarding its environmental justification for removing chargers from iPhone packaging.
