India Cuts Component Duties for iPhone Assembly

India has eliminated import duties on key smartphone components, a move designed to lower manufacturing costs and further bolster the country's appeal for electronics assembly. The government removed duties ranging from 5% to 7.5% on parts like wireless charging modules and lithium-ion cells, with these exemptions set to last until March 31, 2029.

This policy change directly benefits companies like Apple, whose manufacturing partners, such as Foxconn and Tata Electronics, have been steadily increasing iPhone production in India. As Apple diversifies its global supply chain away from China, cheaper component imports make India a more cost-competitive location for final assembly. The duty cuts apply to components, not finished devices, allowing manufacturers to import parts more affordably.

The initiative is part of India's broader strategy to expand its electronics manufacturing sector, aiming for a $500 billion industry by fiscal year 2030. By reducing the cost of critical parts, India encourages greater domestic production and investment, strengthening its position in the global electronics supply chain and potentially spurring battery manufacturing.
