Bluesky Adds New Setting to Avoid Going Viral

Bluesky is adding a new privacy setting that allows users to prevent their posts from being shown to non-followers in the algorithmic "discover" feed. The feature, available in the app's privacy settings, is an account-level control that stops all posts from appearing in discover for people who don't already follow you. It does not make posts entirely private or undiscoverable, as Bluesky does not support private accounts like X.

Even with the setting enabled, posts may still appear in other algorithmically curated feeds or services using the AT Protocol. The discover feed remains a key way users find content from accounts they don't follow, which can lead to unintended viral moments. Bluesky says the change is "one of a few updates we're working on to give you more control over your experience and help you find your people." The tool aims to help users avoid inadvertently becoming a "main character" due to unwanted attention.
