Bluesky Active Users Decline as Focus Expands

Decentralized social network Bluesky saw a surge in users following the 2024 U.S. elections, but its mobile app now has 10.4 million monthly active users worldwide in June 2026, down 27.2% year-over-year. Daily active users also fell 25.6% to around 3 million in July. Quarterly averages dropped from 22.1 million in Q4 2024 to 10.7 million in Q2 2026, a 52% decline.

However, new CEO Toni Schneider is less concerned with app growth, focusing instead on the AT Protocol powering other apps like Black Sky and Eurosky. Bluesky launched the AI research tool Attie and is adding private data support to attract users interested in private networking rather than public discourse.

Similarweb data shows X's mobile monthly active users were down only 3% year-over-year, with web visits up 5.3%. Threads, meanwhile, saw daily active users rise 21.3% to 147 million. Bluesky reports 46 million registered users but does not share active usage metrics.
