Apple has reached a significant milestone in diversifying its iPhone production, hitting the 50% mark in its goal to split manufacturing equally between China and India. The company reportedly produced 55 million iPhones in India during 2025, representing a 53% increase from the previous year. This shift comes despite Apple paying a premium to assemble devices outside China.

For years, Apple has worked to reduce its dependence on Chinese manufacturing, with India emerging as its primary alternative hub. The company achieved a key breakthrough by producing the iPhone 17 lineup simultaneously in both countries, whereas previous models launched in China first with India following later. US import tariffs on Chinese-made products have accelerated this transition, with Apple now aiming to manufacture all US-bound iPhones in India.

This manufacturing diversification represents a major strategic shift for Apple, which assembles approximately 220-230 million iPhones globally each year. The company has been negotiating tax breaks to offset the higher costs of Indian production, including securing exemptions on manufacturing equipment provided to local contract manufacturers. Reaching this halfway point demonstrates Apple's commitment to building a more resilient supply chain while navigating geopolitical tensions and trade barriers.
