Xbox Explores Digitizing Physical Games for Players

Microsoft's Xbox division is reportedly testing a program to let players digitize their physical game disc collections. This initiative would allow users to redeem digital copies of their Xbox One and Series X/S titles, eliminating the need to insert discs to play. The move comes as the industry shifts further toward digital distribution, and potentially as a response to similar actions by competitors.

This disc-to-digital service aims to link a digital game version to its physical counterpart. Once redeemed, the digital copy would be tied to a player's account, preventing simultaneous play from a single disc and its digital twin. It also means players could still trade in physical games. Compatible titles could also be streamed via Xbox Cloud Gaming for Game Pass subscribers.

The program reportedly won't cover original Xbox or Xbox 360 titles, and may not support every Xbox One game. Details are still emerging, and an official announcement is not expected immediately, particularly with internal restructuring underway at Microsoft. However, this effort could significantly bolster Xbox's game preservation efforts for its user base.

This initiative addresses concerns about physical media longevity and the potential obsolescence of disc drives in future consoles. While Xbox already offers strong backward compatibility, a digital redemption system offers a more future-proof solution for accessing older physical game purchases on new hardware, ensuring continued access and playability.
