X revamps revenue sharing to target fake US accounts

X is overhauling its revenue-sharing system to prioritize engagement from users' home regions, according to Nikita Bier, the platform's Head of Product. The change aims to boost content that resonates with local audiences and neighboring countries sharing similar languages. Bier emphasized that while X values global perspectives on US politics, the platform wants to disincentivize accounts gaming American user attention.

This policy shift comes after X's transparency feature revealed dozens of popular accounts posting pro-Trump content were actually based in countries like India, Kenya, and Nigeria. These accounts had amassed millions of interactions while pretending to be American users. The US and Japan remain X's largest user bases, making them prime targets for engagement manipulation.

Bier defended the change when challenged by users from smaller markets, suggesting they share local experiences rather than foreign political commentary. The new system will take effect on Thursday, March 26, marking X's latest attempt to combat inauthentic engagement farming. By weighting regional interactions more heavily, X hopes to create a more authentic global conversation while reducing the financial incentive for users to masquerade as Americans or Japanese to boost their earnings.
