X Algorithm Tweak Prioritizes Replies From Mutuals

X is rolling out a "small tweak" to boost visibility of posts and replies to mutuals — people you follow who follow you back. Head of product Nikita Bier explained the algorithm lacked programming to surface friends' responses prominently, making replies feel like a "battleground" with unrecognized users.

The update aims to help users find common interests more easily and foster less toxic, more meaningful exchanges. X hopes prioritizing mutual connections will improve conversation quality on the platform.

The company previously shut down its Communities feature in April after it failed to gain traction. Bier noted Communities were used by less than 0.4 percent of users yet accounted for 80 percent of spam reports, financial scams, and malware, consuming disproportionate moderation resources.
