Meta, TikTok, and Snap, alongside YouTube, are set to participate in a new online safety rating system focused on adolescent mental health. The initiative comes from the Mental Health Coalition's Safe Online Standards (SOS). These platforms will submit documentation on their policies and features, which will be assessed by an independent panel of experts. This program aims to establish clear data on how digital platforms protect users aged 13-19.

After evaluation, platforms will receive one of three ratings, including "use carefully," which indicates that platforms have accessible reporting tools and clear privacy settings. The Mental Health Coalition, founded in 2020, has a history of collaboration with Meta, including joint campaigns and data-sharing programs. Meta is currently facing legal challenges regarding the impact of its products on young users. Other participating companies include Roblox and Discord.

This move comes as social media companies face increasing scrutiny over their impact on teen mental health. The "use carefully" rating requires platforms to help reduce exposure to harmful content. The ratings system and standards aim to encourage platforms to prioritize user safety. The SOS initiative will provide a framework for evaluating the effectiveness of safety measures implemented by these companies. This is a crucial step towards greater accountability.
