Marathon Free Week Launches June 2

Bungie will host Marathon's first open play week from June 2-9, offering new players a free trial across Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The preview allows progress to carry over to the full game, providing a low-risk entry point as the studio faces recent challenges including ending Destiny 2 development and potential Sony layoffs.

Season two introduces several major additions: the defensive Sentinel class with its point-defense drone ability, a nighttime Dire Marsh map that embraces cosmic horror with slower-paced survival mechanics, and the Cradle customization system. The new zone offers fewer players but more environmental challenges, creating a distinctly different experience from the daytime version.

With the current season ending, all players will receive an item vault and armory reset, creating equal footing for newcomers. The Cradle system allows converting extra weapons into experience for stat upgrades, offering progression separate from the faction system. This comes as Bungie works to improve the game's onboarding experience while navigating significant corporate changes.

The free trial serves as both a player recruitment tool and a morale boost for the embattled developer. With recent reports of Sony planning "significant" layoffs at Bungie, a successful preview week could demonstrate the game's potential and help stabilize the studio's future direction in the competitive FPS market.
