LG Stops McAfee Monitor Ads After Microsoft Pressure

LG has agreed to stop McAfee pop-up spam from its monitors after pressure from Microsoft. Windows Chief Pavan Davuluri announced on X that LG will disable the McAfee pop-up from its app following user outcry over monitors silently installing the "LG Monitor App Installer" via Windows Update.

The issue affected newer monitors and some 2024 models. When connected to Windows 11, monitors surreptitiously added the installer without permission, which then pushed ads for McAfee and other products. LG claimed the installer doesn't automatically install McAfee and was distributed through Microsoft's official process, but didn't explain why it installed its own ad-pushing app without consent.

After a $1,200 monitor was highlighted by Gamers Nexus, its rating dropped to one star and price was nearly halved. Users can remove the app via Settings > Apps > Installed apps by searching for "LG Monitor App Installer" and uninstalling it.
