Ads and tracking have turned TVs into privacy nightmares, prompting recommendations to use computer monitors instead. However, monitors are increasingly adopting similar practices. LG recently lost trust after reports that some monitors installed McAfee pop-up ads onto connected computers via the LG Monitor App Installer, delivered through Windows Update since at least 2024.

An LG spokesperson stated the app aims to "make related software available to help customers access monitor-specific features and functionality," but it pushed ads for LG software like LG Switch and LG Dual Controller. Microsoft has since forced LG to remove the McAfee ads, though the clandestine installation method remains concerning. The app's Microsoft Store page notes it can "use all system resources" and "access your Internet connection." LG's privacy policy now claims the app and distributed monitor applications "do not collect, use, store, or share personal information," with updates promised if future versions process personal data.

Without clearer vendor approaches, monitors risk becoming as invasive as smart TVs.
