macOS Adapts Controls for Touch on New MacBook Pro

Apple announced a new MacBook Pro with a PROLED XDR Display on Wednesday, marking its first Mac with a touch-supported screen. Demonstrations show how macOS reshapes its controls for finger input, including expanded menu bar items, larger window controls, and a pull-down Dynamic Island widget.

Back in 2016, then-senior VP of marketing Phil Schiller (now Apple Fellow) argued that adding touch to a Mac display would require totally redesigning the menu bar for fingers, clashing with pointer devices. Apple's modern solution is more subtle: the menu bar looks the same, but items expand under a fingertip for more precise selection.

The same approach applies across macOS. Traffic-light window buttons grow larger when touched, and swiping up from the bottom reveals a hidden Dock. The new MacBook Pro replaces the notch with a Dynamic Island hosting Spotlight, Live Activities, and Siri AI, which can be pulled down into a floating widget.

Apple says macOS automatically translates touch into clicks, so many existing apps work with touch immediately without developer updates. Interactions include swiping to scroll, pinching to zoom, dragging and dropping, and double-tapping windows to fill the screen. Pro apps like DaVinci Resolve and Logic Pro have also been updated for finger input.

The new MacBook Pro is available to pre-order now, starting at $2,899 for the 14-inch model and $3,399 for the 16-inch model, launching on Friday, November 6.
