Hulu’s Data Saver Trims Picture Quality on Mobile

Hulu’s default "Data Saver" mode pulls back stream resolution on iOS and Android phones, forcing users to watch in lower quality unless they switch to "Best Available." The setting appears in the app’s Settings under Cellular Data Usage.

The feature limits playback to 720p or lower, even when 4K titles are available. On web browsers, users can toggle quality via the gear icon, but televisions automatically select the highest possible resolution.

Consumers who watch on mobile notice the dip most acutely, especially when competing services offer higher quality on the same device. The practice mirrors past lawsuits where Hulu was accused of throttling web streams.

To avoid the downgrade, users must manually adjust settings or switch to a TV or smart‑device app, which defaults to the best available quality.
